UCSW Hereford Raceday Success

The Union of Country Sports Workers had a very successful day at Hereford Racecourse on firework night, raising over £16,000 from the Charity Race, Silent Action, Whisky raffle and bucket collection at the end of the day.

There were seven races, the last of which was renamed the Hugh Thomas Memorial Standard Open NH Flat Race following Hugh’s sudden death a fortnight earlier. Hugh had been on the committee for a many years and was one of the co-signatories of the Legal challenge against the Hunting Act with UCSW member Brian Friend. The court case is now going to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasburg.

The charity race had 11 horses, whose jockeys raised a magnificent £11,000, and was won by Marion Collins from Hereford. She is an assistant to a licensed trainer and has hunted for 15yrs. She has also evented at novice level and ridden in a point-to-point. Gary Barber, who has been a huntsman for 23 years and is currently with the Pembrokeshire Foxhounds, was second and Maurice McCarthy from Blackpool was third. This was his 8th Charity Race, including one at Cheltenham, and he says he won’t hang up his boots until he has won at least one! The race can be viewed on YouTube - The Brightwells Charity Flat Race.

As a result of people’s generosity, donations of £1,000 each will be sent to the Air Ambulance and the Hunt Staff Benefit Society. The day ended with a magnificent fireworks display provided by Hereford Racecourse.

Alex Ford, Chairman of the UCSW, said “We had a large team of committee and members helping out on the day and they did a great job. Our thanks go to Hereford Racecourse for giving us the opportunity of holding the day and the generosity of all our sponsors.”
